Children of the Corn (1984)

Children of the Corn. It is a cult lead by a boy named  Isaac Chroner, who tells the children of the town that anyone over the age of 18 must be sacrificed to the god called "He Who Walks Behind the Rows" in order to have a successful corn harvest. Typically the people (children?) are sacrificed on their 19th birthday.

Malachi
Eventually, the rest of the kids get tired of Issac's arrogance and are lead by another boy named Malachi and overthrow Issac. It is revealed that "He Who Walks Behind the Rows" is a demon, and that by burning the cornfield they can escape. By they, I mean the couple who stumble upon the town, named Burt and Vicky, along with two children who did not want to be a part of the cult.

This movie has a good number of sequels, all of which are good in their own way. I recommend this movie to anyone who has an interest in things such as cults and the possible things that can happen. Although I personally don't think that this is a true cult. At least, I hope Stephen King just made it up....it would be very scary if it was based on something true.

Cherry 2000 (1987)

This is a great movie. I enjoy it because it's so futuristic in some ways, and in others it is very much old school. It rivals the setup of many other films, with how the chase scenes are done. I really enjoy this film much better than a lot of other ones, because I like the more original story and adventure setup, along with the fact a woman is the best guide in the land, or so it seems.

I love the car that they drive, a Mustang. I love older Mustangs. Something about them just says power. It exudes some sort of great power.

The reason behind the quest is a man who is "married" to a robot, and the robot shorts out, causing him to go on a search for a replacement. He only wants that specific model, a Cherry 2000. It is a hard model to find, because it was a limited edition model.

During this search, he realizes that Edith, his guide, is the woman he truly loves, and he gives up the Cherry 2000 to another man.

A scene from the movie, during which we see some of the aspects of this futuristic world

Mallrats (1995)

Mallrats. Everyone (or possibly the majority of people) knows that one person who seems to spend all their time at the mall. Which is basically what a Mallrat is. This film is one of the first in which Jay and Silent Bob show up, although they are mostly supporting characters, and yet play a prominent role.

This is about a guy, named T.S., whose girlfriend tells him she will be appearing on her father's game show because the contestant he did have in mind died (it's a bit more complex than that, but that's the gist of it.)

His best friend, Brodie, whom his girlfriend broke up with that morning in a poem, which I thought was highly classical. I enjoyed the fact that he then spends most of the day trying to win her back, and does so successfully  at the end of the movie. I also enjoy that Brodie is a huge comic book collector/geek of ultimate proportions.

Of course, during all of this, Brodie and T.S. face a lot of obstacles, one of which is T.S.'s girlfriend's father trying to frame them with drugs and get them kicked out of the mall and possibly arrested.

SLC! Punk (1998)

This film stars Matthew Lillard as Stevo, one of the only two real punks in Salt Lake City, Utah. His friend is called Heroin Bob, which is ironic because he doesn't like drugs (with the exception of cigarettes or alcohol).

I feel that the ultimate message in this movie, even if it wasn't intended, is that a lot of the time, you really aren't what you think of yourself as. For example, Stevo and Bob are the stereotypical anarchist punk type, but when Bob is given Percodan while he is intoxicated it kills him in his sleep, and when Stevo loses his best friend (which is Bob) he shaves his head, begins dressing in a more mature and socially acceptable fashion, and decides to go to Harvard.

I think that another part of this movie is in the fact thaat losing someone so close to you can impact you in all kinds of ways, and that loss affects everyone differently. I always cry at when Bob dies, I just feel so bad for Stevo because he loses his best friend, and I always imagine how I would feel at losing my best friend. I think Stevo handles it rather well, all things considered.

Master of Disguise (2002)

The Master of Disguise. I love this film. It is a perfect cult film for children. That is probably why I enjoy it, because it is one of a few cult films that any one of any age can watch.

Dana Carvey is a great actor. He shows many faces in this film, seeing as how he's an actor who plays a guy who is a master of disguise, so it can be seen as an actor playing an actor. Quite a mind boggling thing, if you think about it.

I enjoy how the main character's name is Pistachio. I don't know how exactly that was his chosen name, but I find it amusing.

One of the most popular ways he disguises himself is as a turtle. A very convincing turtle, at that. Another favorite way of mine that he disguises himself is one of his first successful transformations into becoming another person is as a snake charmer.

The People Under The Stairs (1991)

Wes Craven. A horror movie genius. I love this film. I personally think it is his best, but that is just me. The first time I ever saw this film, I ended up too afraid of the basement to even go near the door.

This movie is great, though. I love how the one child, who had his tongue cut out and is mute, has the elaborate labyrinth in the walls of the house, who manages to mostly escape Mommy and Daddy (the only real way we know about the adults who are in the house who control the kids in the basement) until he is finally killed.

The people under the stairs turn out to be former children of Mommy and Daddy who have either spoken, seen, or heard something that the pair consider "evil". Those children have had the offending part removed. It's quite a creepy idea, seeing how ridiculously crazy about that they are. I think that the two definitely have some issues that they need to get lots and lots and lots of psychological help with things.

I recommend this flick to anyone who wants a Wes Craven without massive hardcore scary. Yes, this is a scary film, but I feel that it could have been much scarier than it is.

I first watched this film when I was about eight or nine. I got scared, but not nearly as scared as I have gotten from other films at older ages. (I'm eighteen now. Don't intentionally allow small children to watch scary movies. I watched a lot of scary films at younger ages due to having an older brother and my pretending to be asleep.)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 (1990)

TCM. DEFINITELY not a family flick. This version is my favorite, because it features Viggo Mortensen as one of the family members.

This film is the reason why I do not ever want to get lost in Texas. No offense to you, Texas, I just don't ever want to get lost there. I think a good bit of America might agree with me. Personally though, I think it's interesting how the people in this film got to where they are. I am not 100% sure about it, but oh well. It's an interesting story anyways.

The little girl in this film is so convincing that she needs help, that I legitimately thought she needed saving the very first time I saw this film. I got scared out of my mind when she did what she did. I think that's why so many people love this series, even though it has had so many remakes and sequels made based on it.

I personally think the scariest thing about this whole movie series is the fact that in one of the films, it starts off by saying it is based upon a true story. (I did some investigation, most of the TCM movies was made up although partially based upon previous real life serial killers. There was no family of chainsaw wielding killers, though.)

Big Money Rustlas (2010)

Again, a cult movie only two years old, but hey, this is a movie released by Psychopathic Records. Clearly, it's going to be a massive cult hit, thanks to Juggalos everywhere. (Hopefully, some of you reading this know what I'm talking about with all my ICP references.)

This is Violent J and his underlings in Big Money Rustlas
I love this film. I love the Dark Carnival, I love Psychopathic Records, I love Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J. I love their music, I love their sense of humor, I love just about everything about them. (Yep, I am a Juggalette. I'll admit it.) For those of you who don't know, Juggalos are male ICP fans, while Juggalettes are the female fans. (Recommendation: Don't go to Urban Dictionary and look up the definition of a Juggalette or Juggalo. The definitions are from people who appear to be very cruel to people who are fans of something they hate and are very cynical towards. Trust me, it's not as bad as those definitions make it seem.)

Enough of my obsession kick, BACK TO DISCUSSING THE FILM :D

So, this is a comedy, partially inspired by films such as Blazin' Saddles and old westerns. I love the comedy, albeit the slightly raunchy level of it. This is not a family film, so don't try letting a small kid watch it. There is a good deal of swearing and insinuations of adult situations, but it's a hilarious movie, if you are old enough to watch it.

Basically, it's about a guy named Sugar Wolf, played by Shaggy 2 Dope, who returns to his home town to fight some bandits after his mother had sent him away to live with his aunt at a young age. The base plot is very similar to a lot of other westerns.

My Soul to Take (2010)

Ok. So, a cult movie is typically older than just two years, but I love this film. Part of me thinks it was a film that was intentionally made as a cult film. I don't know how many people would agree with me, but seeing as how it fits that whole not being a huge hit right away helps. It still isn't entirely huge, but I hope that it gets there eventually.

I love the story behind it. A murderer dies and seven babies are all born within moments of each other, and they end up being called the "Riverton Seven". I think its interesting at the huge diversity in just seven children.

Bug :D
I love how Bug ends up being basically a keeper of souls, even though at the beginning of the film it seems like he's the weakest. I love how the underdog is the champion of everyone at the end. I also enjoy how the other six of the Riverton Seven don't appear to like Bug, but then they help him fight the adversary at the end of the film.

The Riverton Seven, along with their killer.
I definitely recommend this film to anyone who wants to watch a movie that is a bit of a thriller without being overly scary, or beating a dead horse by using overused themes and scare tactics of other movies that have been repeated to no end.

Waterworld (1995)

Waterworld. Sounds simple, right? Well, it is somewhat more complex than it seems. It is set some time in the future, where no one is really sure of how the world became covered in water. Most people do not even believe in dry land. They call it a myth, a legend.

Some people are even mutating into something that is similar to a fish-person, with gills and webbed feet with the ability to breathe under water.

During this film, you learn that there is a girl who was found floating in a basket full of dirt, who has a tattoo on her back that is believed to be something like a compass that points to dry land, if you can figure out the code. I am not certain, but I'm pretty sure the tattoo is in Chinese or some other language that uses symbols. It's actually a pretty cool tattoo, in my opinion. Kevin Costner is protecting the girl and the woman who is basically her adoptive mother.

One of my favorite parts of this movie is when Kevin Costner's character goes in the water as bait for a giant fish. He gets swallowed by it, then kills the creature from the inside out. I don't know exactly what creature it is, although I always assumed it was a type of fish that grew a lot larger due to the massive amounts of water covering the planet.

The way they dress, you can tell that the clothes are rather old. The way they look also shows that people have some creativity in what they use to make them. I find the whole world look seems worn down, and very nomadic which could probably happen if the ice caps really did melt without an ice age following.

The Princess Bride (1987)

Inigo Montoya
"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
The Princess Bride. Sounds like a sappy chick flick, right? Well, you would only be half correct. This movie is hilarious.

I love the diversity of people that participated in the creation of this film. Andre the Giant was one of them. At a whooping 7', he was clearly seen towering over the heads of the rest of the characters. I feel that his character was true to him, seeing as how he was a supposed bad guy who would not really hurt a fly. I think he plays his role as a gentle giant very easily.

The moments in this movie that I find amusing are many, and I am kept laughing quite frequently. For a movie based upon a previously published book, it does rather well. Honestly, I think this is one of the better book-turned-movie's that I've ever seen.

What makes me love it even more is the fact that it was a well loved book, but has since fallen out of the public view for the most part. Part of that is what makes a great cult flick, the being out of sight and mind of the general populous.

I love how during one scene, Westley, the hero in this film, has to overcome the three "bad guys" to rescue his princess. The first trial is a sword fight with Inigo. The second test is a wrestling match with Andre the Giant's character. The third and final test is a battle of wits with the leader of the bad guys.

Of course, this film wouldn't be as successful if Westley would live the whole time. Yep, that's right folks, he dies. Or at least, that's what the rest of the characters think, except for Miracle Max, who pronounces Westley only "Mostly dead". Of course, Magic Max is hesitant at first to heal him, but then does due to prodding from his wife.

I love how this seemingly has everything a person could want in a film. Action, adventure, fantasy, true love, a pretty girl, a brave hero to come rescue the fair maiden. If you ever want to just watch an older classic, without it being too old, this is the film to watch.

Pictures from:

Wayne's World (1992)

Mike Myers. Dana Carvey. A comedic duo worthy of the gods. (If you believe in that sort of thing.) I love this flick, for several reasons, one of which is I grew up watching this movie. On days when I wanted to watch a film where the characters knew about the cameras and would talk to them, I tended to watch this movie.

My favorite moment would have to be when Garth makes a donut man and then proceeds to stab him with a straw or whatever it is he has in his hand. I just love that moment. I have no idea how you would be able to go through this movie without laughing.
If you don't laugh at the scene where they sing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", you have no sense of humor. The headbanging, the metal bar, the fight that Dana Carvey as Garth gets into with a guy who is a lot taller and bigger. This movie has so much satire in it that it is impossible to detect the truly serious moments until you have watched this movie once or twice.

I highly recommend watching this film on a day when you just want to be entertained with mindless simplicity. And, of course, if you want to watch Mike Myers and Dana Carvey grovel at Alice Cooper's feet, because let's be honest, who wouldn't grovel at that man's feet? He is a legend amongst men.

Blues Brothers (1980)

The Blues Brothers. SNL characters portrayed by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi that recieved their own film that became an instant hit.

I absolutely LOVE this film. I mean, really. Giving a used prophylactic back to the guy who came to prison with it:? Just a bit extreme, but hilarious because the guy picks it up with a pen. And the way he says it! "One unsoiled prophylactic, one soiled" with the look on his face. It gets me every time.

All the things that go well for Jake and Elwood makes you really believe that they truly are on a mission from God to rescue the orphanage they were raised at. I love that they call the nun "The Penguin" and that when they call her that she hits them with a ruler, breaking it on them and they start swearing. At a nun! So much comedy is in this film that the first time I saw it, I couldn't breathe from laughter.
The car falls apart when they reach the tax office to pay the back taxes, after being persued by police officers, FBI, Illinois Nazis, and a crazed ex-fiancee.

The thought that went into this film into making all the small details happen and all the small jokes and happenings. You know these two were dedicated to their roles.

I highly recommend this movie for both cult movie fans, and jazz fans. The soundtrack is incredible. It features Ray Charles, among others. Shake a Tail Feather, anyone?

Cry-Baby (1990)

The Cry-Baby Gang
This movie is entirely hilarious. It exaggerates the rift that can occur between different groups of people, and shows how people can overcome their prejudices to become friends, or even more.

One of my favorite parts is the beginning, simply because the teen reactions to getting the shots are rather comical. I enjoy the looks on their faces and how hilarious they seem.

Calling the "normal people" squares just makes me laugh, and calling the people that are different "drapes". Whenever they call them drapes I think of curtains, and I start laughing at calling someone a decorative hanging.

I find it strange that they call Johnny Depp's character Cry-Baby, because he only ever lets loose one tear until the end of the movie; yet I still find it humorous.

In this film, I feel that the drapes are better people than the squares. The drapes don't ever seem to do anything too bad, they seem to just stay at their end of town and try to stay away from the squares. Although they do antagonize each other; the drapes seem at least slightly more accepting of other people.

I also love how they portray a teen mother in a slightly better image than most movies. Pepper truly loves her kids, which is refreshing to see in a teen film. A lot of the time, it seems like teen mothers are shown as uncaring and somewhat cold towards their children.

This is definitely a must see for any Johnny Depp fan. This movie has Johnny Depp in his perfect teen heart-throb role.
